The terms governing your use of CodexPetDB

Version: 1.0 · Effective date: 2026-07-15 · Last updated: 2026-07-15

1. About these Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of CodexPetDB (the "Service"). By browsing, creating an account, downloading, installing, uploading, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

CodexPetDB is maintained by the CodexPetDB project maintainers ("we", "us", or "our"). For legal questions, contact legal@codexpetdb.com.

If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be legally able to agree to these Terms. If applicable law requires permission from a parent or guardian, you may use the Service only with that permission.

You are responsible for the accuracy of your account information, for keeping your credentials secure, and for activity performed through your account. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us promptly.

3. The Service

CodexPetDB lets people browse, preview, download, install, upload, and share desktop pets and related package metadata. Pets may be created by community members and may include original work, fan creations, or material inspired by existing characters, works, or brands.

Features may change as the project evolves. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue parts of the Service when reasonably necessary for maintenance, security, legal compliance, or project operations.

4. Your content and rights

You retain any rights you have in files, artwork, metadata, descriptions, and other material you submit ("Your Content"). We do not claim ownership of Your Content.

By submitting Your Content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, technically process, generate preview formats from, publicly display, and distribute Your Content as needed to operate CodexPetDB. This includes displaying previews and distributing the downloadable pet package you submitted.

The license also permits us to feature Your Content within CodexPetDB to help people discover pets. It does not transfer ownership to us or authorize uses unrelated to operating and promoting the Service. When Your Content is removed, this license ends except where copies must remain temporarily in backups, security records, or records needed to address a dispute or legal request.

5. Your responsibilities when submitting content

You represent that you have the rights, permissions, or other lawful basis needed to submit Your Content and grant the license above. Do not submit content that infringes copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights.

Fan creations may be shared only at the submitter's own risk. CodexPetDB does not claim ownership of third-party characters, works, brands, or other underlying intellectual property. Rights holders can review our takedown process.

6. Acceptable use

You must not use the Service to:

  • upload illegal, infringing, deceptive, hateful, exploitative, or abusive content;
  • distribute malware, corrupted packages, credential-stealing code, or other harmful material;
  • impersonate another person or misrepresent your authority or affiliation;
  • interfere with the Service, bypass security controls or rate limits, probe for vulnerabilities without permission, or disrupt other users;
  • scrape, automate, or redistribute the Service in a way that creates an unreasonable operational burden or violates applicable law; or
  • use another person's personal information without a lawful basis.

7. Review, removal, and account restrictions

We may use automated safety checks and staff review before publication, and may review content again after publication. We may reject, restrict, unpublish, or remove content when we reasonably believe it violates these Terms, creates a security risk, infringes rights, or exposes the project or its users to harm. Uncertain automated results may remain pending for staff review.

We may limit or suspend accounts involved in repeated or serious violations. Submitting a report does not automatically remove content; reports are reviewed manually and may require follow-up information.

8. Third-party services and pet packages

The Service may link to GitHub, authentication providers, package tools, and other third-party services. Their own terms and privacy policies apply.

Community pet packages are supplied by their submitters. Inspect package details before installation and use appropriate security precautions. We do not endorse or guarantee third-party characters, brands, links, licenses, or package contents merely because a pet appears on CodexPetDB.

9. Disclaimers and limitation of responsibility

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent permitted by law, we do not make warranties that the Service will always be available, error-free, secure, or suitable for a particular purpose.

To the extent permitted by law, the project maintainers are not responsible for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive losses arising from use of the Service or community-submitted content. Nothing in these Terms limits responsibility that cannot lawfully be limited.

10. Changes and contact

We may update these Terms as the Service changes. The version and dates at the top of this page will be updated when changes take effect. Material changes may also be announced through the Service or another reasonable channel.

Questions about these Terms can be sent to legal@codexpetdb.com. For how we handle personal information, see our Privacy Policy.
